We need to be reminded again what they have to say about women and disgruntlement. Yes, indeed, “Hell has no fury like the woman scorned”. That aphorism is a favorite of Aakash Kaushik, writer, and Anees Bazmee at the ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa2’ camp. We all have our opinions and feelings about the sequel, but let’s not get too attached to the memories of Akshay Kum’s first instalment and let the new version speak for itself.

Scene two shows that the wealthy family has left their mansion to find one of their children, Manjulika, the womanizer. The Thakurs have eaten eight family members and are certain Manjulika is now in their house, where he has been locked up and hidden in a poor room. How did Ruhan, a charming little punk, find his way in this mess of family members? In comes lovely, naive Reet. “Bhool Bhulaiyya 2″ is not the same as its tale of origin. That is its secret magic spell.
Bazmee is no stranger to comedy. Some may even call him a master of the genre. However, he knows that in India, satire and sex are the two main content-consumption preferences of our viewers. Bazmee emphasizes the former. To expand on the original point (about uniqueness of tone and treatment), BB2 invests heavily in situational comedy; add witty dialogues and quick humour to the grind and the result is ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2”.
This film is unlike anything you have ever seen. It would be a crime to compare Aaryan and Kumar, as the former must have felt the pressure to the limit given Kumar’s success with the film in 2007. However, there is a constant humming sound while you watch the film. It’s the breadcrumbs for a star. Especially his signature head-nod-and-squishy-eyes move, which was replicated (perhaps as a ‘nod’ to Kumar’s nod; an ode to a senior) by Aaryan. He tries, even though it isn’t the same. Let’s now look at Kartik Aaryan, the un-star of the movie. Ruhan finds Rutik Aaryan to be a man of integrity and a relaxed, easygoing personality. Kartik Aaryan brought Kartik Aaryan to the set for this film and he gives a charming performance. His chemistry with Kiara, who is a Rajasthani princess in attire and looks, falls flat. The quintessential flirting, frolicking, dancing and kissing is there, but the result is a unflattering PowerPoint presentation. As two people pretending to be friends after only meeting once.
Tabu is one example of someone who brings their best to the table. Tabu should be known for her versatility. If it is, she has that one right about. “BB2” shows her in her element: big curly hair, gajras and a kohl overdrawn. She has an elegance that can’t be learned through training. It is difficult to grasp the enormity of her greatness without sounding dreadful. We will not go there. Keep going, we will not give up. Let this be a sign of something: Tabu’s spirit is characterized by a certain emotion that is strong and can scream rage.
Bazmee also brings back some old players to the game in an effort to keep the stand-alone version’s high-selling points. Rajpal Yadav is a chhote pandit and this is a class apart. Bollywood legends Sanjay Mishra, Rajesh Sharma are next in line. Siddhant Ghegadmal, a child artist, also leaves his mark on the movie as Potlu.
“Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2” is an amalgamation of grief, the grieving, a desi, more gleeful, answer to the old adage, that life is indeed “the greatest tragedy of all”. It navigates black magic, prods along a even gloomier subject, the human nature. This is the best part of the story, and those that don’t stick, must be lost in the maze of life.
